Dear Naturopathic friends,
When I first read Autumn Schafer's posts about essential oils I was not prepared to really understand what she was saying. I have recently completed “The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils, Kurt Schnaubelt” as part of my additional reading for Herbal First Aid. See my post there. I now believe I can better understand what Autumn was saying. Also, I can now begin to place into context Kate's comment about her experience with peppermint oil.
Turns out that Autumn comments ring true and there is considerable evidence to support her claim that essential oils can be used to aid strep, pink eye, stomach issues, digestion issues, high bp, sinusitis, bronchitis. Additionally, Autumn touched on the topic of how greed or the profit motive (see my General Board posts on this topic) compromise our access to quality products.
I hope other students will expand on this topic.
Autumn Schafer
“I started with the drugstore brands and as I educated myself I learned that quality is extremely important!” “We've reduced use of her asthma inhaler, we've used “essential” oils for strep, pink eye, stomach issues, digestion issues, high bp, sinusitis, bronchitis. I cannot remember the last time I purchased a prescription or an over the counter medication.” [1]
Autumn Schafer
“More recent scientific studies have been done and found that some oils can help to alleviate cancer, lower blood pressure, some oils can change the DNA of our cells (eg. cancer).”
“I don't need scientific studies..I have my own testimonies!”
“I've watched as one topical application on my daughter completely stopped her croup cough, the application of lavender on my finger I had sliced stopped the bleeding almost instantly and that cut healed in less than two days.”
“And I love that you brought up good sources of natural oils..yes, indeed. I started off using the NOW brand of oils from my local grocery store...I didn't know they weren't good..but as I educated myself more I learned that there are no guidelines set in place on how those oils are extracted...”
“The book I'd go to is called Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple. It covers how the oils work in our body and why they work..it's a pretty easy read.” [2]
Kate
“By the way, peppermint EO has been very effective for headaches (and digestive issues).” [3]
“If we really intend to learn from nature, in our case from essential oils, resolving the issue of purity and authenticity is the pivot that determines whether or not we will indeed be able to learn. Considering that deception has become an integral part of economic reality in many areas of commerce, it is no surprise that it is rampant in the field of essential oils as well. An ocean of processed oils lies between the seeker and a comparatively minute quantity of truly authentic oils.”
“Authentic essential oils initiate processes designed by evolution arising at the level of the whole plant organism. Adulterated essential oils initiate processes arising at the interface of smart engineering and the corporate objective to cut cost. Most essential oils used for aromatherapy in the U.S. are fabrications and not genuinely and exclusively from a single plant source.”
“This raises three crucial questions:
One, how can purity or absence of adulteration be ascertained?
Two, do 100 percent authentic essential oils really have effects not found in industrially standardized oils?
Three, are active ingredients responsible for the effect of the oil?” [4]
Take care, Fortunateson
