Heart Assessment Tools Dear Naturopathic friends, I was concerned about the poor condition of my first aid kit. I'm adding the following tools to assess heart rate, pulse and rhythm. Best Stethoscope
The Omron Sprague Rappaport is our selection as best buy. Its acoustic performance rivals the Cardiology III at a fraction of the price. The Omron is an excellent choice for students short on money, to stock your exams rooms with, or to keep as a spare stethoscope in your car or desk. It's drawbacks are its bulk and susceptibility to noise artifacts from rubbing the tubes together. However anecdotal accounts describe EMT's using this scope with the tubes taped together, something we didn't try. Some people find the hard earpieces to be uncomfortable. www.forusdocs.com/reviews/Acoustic_Stethoscope_Review_page7.htmPulse Oximeter The CMS 50D deluxe pulse oximeter uses the same technology embedded in the CMS 50 DL pulse oximeters to measure your SpO2 (oxygen saturation) and pulse rate. www.merckmanuals.com/professional/cardiovascular_disorders/symptoms_of_cardiovascular_disorders/palpitations.htmlFortunateson

Dear Naturopathic friends, Most heart conditions can be improved with natural remedies. “Some types of heart valve disease may require medication or surgery: Medicines to prevent blood clots, control irregular heartbeat or palpitations, and lower blood pressure Diuretics to remove excess salt and water from the body, making it easier for your heart to pump Surgery to correct heart defects someone is born with Surgery to correct certain types of heart valve disease” [1] “The November 2011 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine reports that most emergency hospital visits for the elderly are caused by side effects and overdosing from taking blood thinners to prevent strokes and blood clots.” [2] Blood Thinners“Early studies suggested that turmeric may help prevent atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque that can block arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke. In animal studies, an extract of turmeric lowered cholesterol levels and kept LDL "bad" cholesterol from building up in blood vessels. Because it stops platelets from clumping together, turmeric may also prevent blood clots from building up along the walls of arteries. But a double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that taking curcumin, the active ingredient in turrmeric, at a dose of up to 4 g per day did not improve cholesterol levels.” [3] Diuretic“Dandelion leaves act as a diuretic, increasing the amount of urine your body makes. The leaves are used to stimulate the appetite and help digestion. Dandelion flower has antioxidant properties. Dandelion may also help improve the immune system. Herbalists use dandelion root to detoxify the liver and gallbladder, and dandelion leaves to help kidney function.” [4] My husband's cardiologist recommended these, and my husband especially enjoys the easy-to-swallow capsule form. Amazon customer review. Blood Pressure“The alliin in the drug is antimicrobial, lipid-reducing, anti-oxidative and fibrinolytic. The antibacterial, antimycotic and lipid-reducing effects have been well-documented. Inhibition of thrombocyte aggregation, increased bleeding time and clotting time, and enhancement of fibrinolytic activity have been demonstrated in clinical trials.” [5] Fortunateson [1] www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/heart-murmur-causes-treatments?page=2[2] Bye bye Coumadin, so long Plavix - Say hello to five natural blood thinners that protect against strokes and blood clots, Wednesday, April 04, 2012 by: JB Bardot [3] umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/turmeric[4] umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/dandelionCL[5] PDR for Herbal Medicines

Dear Naturopathic friends, In studying herbal first aid, I was disappointed by what appears to be the great number of emergency conditions that could not be treated by natural methods. Heart disease, cancer and stroke being the big three. The number one killers: “The basic causes of heart diseases are wrong dietary habits, faulty style of living and various stresses. The famous Framingham Heart Study of the National Heart and Lung Institute identified seven major risk factors in coronary heart disease. These are: (i) elevated blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and other fatty substances (ii) elevated blood pressure (iii) elevated blood uric acid levels (mainly caused by high protein diet), (iv) certain metabolic disorders, notably diabetes, (v) obesity, (vi) smoking, and (vii) lack of physical exercise. Each or a combination of these risk factors can contribute to heart disease. Most of them are of dietary origin. These risk factors can be controlled by changing one’s life style and readjusting the diet.” [1] The M.D. who said he would not recommend eating more broccoli to the person suffering from a heart attack was perhaps being disingenuous. He's right eating more broccoli is not the correct answer in an emergency situation but it is part of the solution. The correct answer is using the life saving, natural remedies like those summarized in the following book. According to the authors, these methods can address even acute cases. These methods work fast and offer an alternative to surgery and the dreaded chemotherapy. Cancer-Free.png morgellonsdiseaseawareness.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Cancer-Free_4th_Edition.6264839.pdf Cayenne Pepper “Dr. John Christopher declared: "In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around)." First the Cayenne pepper must be at least 90,000 heat units or 90,000(H.U.) to be able to stop a heart attack. If the cayenne is at least 90,000 H.U. and the person is still conscious, the recommendation is to mix 1 teaspoon of cayenne powder in a glass of warm water (this is essentially a "cayenne tea"), and give it to the person to drink. If the person is unconscious then the recommendation is to use a cayenne tincture or extract, again of at least 90,000 H.U., and put a couple of full droppers underneath their tongue full strength.” [2] The Budwig Diet In 1967, Dr. Budwig broadcast the following sentence during an interview over the South German Radio Network, describing her incoming patients with failed operations and x-ray (radiation) therapy: 'Even in these cases it is possible to restore health in a few months at most, I would truly say 90% of the time.' www.budwigcenter.com/As for Dr. Budwig herself, she lived until 2003, when she passed away at 94. She had continued lecturing all over Europe through 1999. She had been nominated for seven Nobel prizes during her 50 plus years of advocacy about oils in the human body and treatment of patients with cancer. Influential members of the allopathic medical community and the food (particularly margarine) processors always blocked her award of that well-deserved honor. Dr. Matthias Rath – Lysine/Proline - Vitamin C The next treatment that address heart disease and cancer regimen t is a mixture of Vitamin C, l-Lysine and l-Proline. This combination was discovered by Dr. Matthias Rath and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling in 1984. Blood PressureHypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure, sometimes called arterial hypertension, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. Blood pressure is summarised by two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole). This equals the maximum and minimum pressure, respectively. Hypertension puts strain on the heart, leading to hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease. Hypertension is also a major risk factor for stroke, aneurysms of the arteries (e.g. aortic aneurysm), peripheral arterial disease and chronic kidney disease. Hypertension is classified as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension; about 90–95% of cases are categorized as primary hypertension which means high blood pressure with no obvious underlying medical cause. The remaining 5–10% of cases categorized as secondary hypertension is caused by other conditions that affect the kidneys, arteries, heart or endocrine system. Chest Pain
“Chest pain may be a symptom of a number of serious conditions and is, in general, considered a medical emergency. Even though it may be determined that the pain is non-cardiac in origin, this is often a diagnosis of exclusion made after ruling out more serious causes of the pain.” [1] [2] Cayenne Pepper
“Cayenne has been known to stop heart attacks within 30 seconds. For example, when a 90-year-old man in Oregon had a severe heart attack, his daughter was able to get Cayenne extract into his mouth. He was pronounced dead by the medics, but within a few minutes, he regained consciousness. On the way to the hospital, he remained in a semi-conscious state, but the daughter kept giving him the Cayenne extract. By the time they got to the hospital, he had fully recovered and wanted to go home and mow the lawn. The doctor asked what she had given him, as he said it was the closest thing to a miracle he had ever seen. The amazing medicinal properties of Cayenne Pepper Capsicum (cayenne pepper) is said to be unequal for its ability to boost circulation and increase heart action. Capsicum exerts a variety of desirable actions on the entire cardiovascular system. It has the extraordinary ability to enhance cardiovascular performance while actually lowering blood pressure. Capsicum has an energizing effect on the entire system. It has traditionally been used for overcoming fatigue and restoring stamina and vigor. It is a natural stimulant without the threatening side effects (palpitations, hyper-activity or rise in blood pressure) of most other stimulating agents. If you want to carry something in your first aid kit for a heart attack, carry a cayenne tincture. Even a bottle of Tabasco Sauce® might be good enough. Dr Christopher discovered that a cup of cayenne tea, one tsp of cayenne in a cup of hot water, stopped a heart attack in under three minutes. If you feel one coming on, try a few droppers-full of cayenne tincture and if that doesn't stop it, then nitroglycerine wouldn't work either. If a heart attack should occur, it is suggested that a teaspoon of extract be given every 15 minutes or a teaspoon of Cayenne in a glass of hot water be taken until the crisis has passed. Dr. Anderson also knew of a doctor who rushed out into the parking lot and put cayenne tincture into the mouth of a man who had died of a heart attack while he was parking his car. Within a few minutes, the mans heart starting beating again. According to Dr. Richard Anderson, using cayenne and hawthorn berries together has a most incredible effect upon the heart. He believes that a regimen of cayenne and hawthorn berries for several months will greatly strengthen the heart, and possibly prevent heart attacks. He states further that if an attack were to occur in someone who had followed this regimen, chances are very good that no damage would occur.” [3] Hawthorn Berries“The University of Maryland Medical Center states that the antioxidants found in hawthorn berries may be responsible for treating a long list of cardiac, respiratory, and circulatory conditions. Hawthorn berries contain flavonoids such as quercitin, and oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs)- the same antioxidants found in grapes. Free radical damage from poor diets and lifestyle plus environmental toxins are responsible for symptoms of aging and numerous health problems. Hawthorn berries are especially helpful in combating heart disease, high blood pressure, palpitations, chest pains (angina) and elevated cholesterol levels. So effective are hawthorn berries that a 2008 medical study published in the German medical journal Arzneimittelforschung proved that a drug containing hawthorn berry juice was tested against other heart and blood pressure medications and found to be safer as well as just as effective.” [4] L-Arginine“One of the most significant, yet little understood discoveries ever awarded by the Nobel Assembly (Swedish awarding body), occurred in 1998. The 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine recognized a 3-man research team for their identification of "nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system." Nitric oxide is the gas released as a cellular signaling molecule to help promote healthy blood vessel flexibility and dilation*” [5] “L-arginine may improve cardiac performance in people with congestive heart failure, according to a 2000 study published in Clinical Cardiology.” [6] Natural Vitamin CAcerola Cherry Powder - Real Vitamin C “Many vitamin supplements contain synthetic vitamin C; most of this synthesized version isn't used by the body and is expelled in urine causing your kidneys and liver to work hard. To truly benefit from vitamin C, you need the complex real vitamin C, not the synthetic version. Real vitamin C is found in natural foods, just like the acerola cherry. Famed for its vitamin C content, with as much as 4.5% of vitamin C per fruit (compared to 0.05% per peeled orange) acerola cherries are also rich in vitamin A, magnesium, niacin, potassium, thiamine, iron and calcium.” [7] How to unblock cholesterol plaqued arteries www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePzJbllNCPgWHOLE FOOD VITAMINS: Ascorbic Acid is Not Vitamin C www.whale.to/a/shea1.html[1] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chest_pain[2] Textbook of Physical Diagnosis, Mark H. PalpitationsPalpitations are the uncomfortable sensations in the chest associated with a range of arrhythmias. Patients may describe palpitations as “fluttering,” “skipped beats,” “pounding,” “jumping,” “stopping,” or “irregularity.” Determine whether the patient has had similar episodes and what was done to extinguish them. Palpitations are common and do not necessarily indicate serious heart disease. Any condition in which there is an increased stroke volume, as in aortic regurgitation, may be associated with a sensation of “forceful contraction.” [1] Causes of Heart Palpitations[2] “Heart palpitations, also called cardiac arrhythmias, are a disturbance in the regular rhythm of the heartbeat. Certain types of heart palpitations are life-threatening and a medical emergency while other types of heart palpitations are not of any major concern. Seek emergency medical help if you also feel faint, dizzy or lightheaded with chest pain or shortness of breath.
Heart palpitations - sensations of a rapid or irregular heartbeat-are most often caused by cardiac arrhythmias or anxiety. Any arrhythmia, including sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, or ventricular tachycardia, can cause palpitations. Heart palpitations should be considered more serious if they are associated with dizziness, near-syncope, or fainting. Cardiac arrhythmia simply means that the heart rhythm is irregular, either too fast or too slow. When your heart beats too fast--more than 100 beats per minute--the condition is known as tachycardia. When it beats too slowly--fewer than 60 beats per minute--you have bradycardia.” [3] Evaluate the Characteristics of the Pulse“The carotid artery is used for the assessment of the contour and amplitude of the pulse. Contour is the shape of the wave. It is frequently described as the speed of the upward slope, downward slope, and duration of the wave. Place a hand firmly against the carotid artery until maximal force is felt. At this moment, the wave form should be discernible. The pulse may be described as normal, iminished, increased, or double-peaked. The normal carotid pulse wave is smooth, with the upward stroke steeper and more rapid than the downward stroke. A diminished pulse is a small, weak pulse. The palpating finger feels a gentle pressure rise with a distinct peak. An increased pulse is a large, strong, hyperkinetic pulse. The palpating finger feels an increased rate of rise of the ascending limb of the pulse and a brisk tap at its peak. A double-peaked pulse has a prominent percussion and tidal wave with or without a dicrotic wave.” [1] [1] Natural or Alternative Heart Palpitations Treatment“Very little research has been done with natural herbs or nutrients in the prevention or therapy of heart palpitations. I have evaluated some of the published research over the past few years and present the nutrients and herbs I have come across that perhaps could be helpful in heart palpitations prevention or treatment. I do not claim that these supplements are a natural heart palpitations cure since more research is needed.” “ Increase your water intake. A decrease in fluid intake can make the heart more prone to irregular rhythms. Fish oils may reduce the frequency and severity of heart palpitations. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been studied for heart arrhythmia more than any other natural supplements. Fish oils stabilize cardiac cell membranes. The study outcomes regarding its benefits have been mixed and I suspect some of the studies that did not show benefits may perhaps be due to the low amounts of fish oils that were used. It may take a high daily dose to be effective, combined with regular consumption of cold water fish and even fish eggs. It may also require an overall change in diet that emphasizes more vegetables and less sugarty. Flax seed oil has omega 3 fatty acids and may help, but flax seed oil may not be as effective as fish oil. Carnitine in amounts less than 100 mg a day CoQ10 in amounts less than 30 mg a day may be helpful. Magnesium has been used for heart palpitations and many doctors find this mineral to be quite helpful at 200 to 400 mg a day initially and then reduced to 100 to 200 mg a day. Hawthorn herb has been tested in rodents and found to have potential benefits against arrhythmias.” [3] [1] Textbook of Physical Diagnosis, Mark H. Heart RateHeart rate, or heart pulse, is the speed of the heartbeat measured by the number of poundings of the heart per unit of time — typically beats per minute (bpm). The heart rate can vary according to the body's physical needs, including the need to absorb oxygen and excrete carbon dioxide. Activities that can provoke change include physical exercise, sleep, anxiety, stress, illness, ingesting, and drugs. The normal resting adult human heart rate ranges from 60–80 bpm. [1] [2] How to Slow a Fast Heart RateAll of these stimulate your vagus nerve (which has direct connections to your heart) and help control the rhythm. After each “vagal maneuver,” check the pulse to see if your heart rate has slowed. a. Valsalva maneuver.Hold your breath and bear down in a strain (like if you’re constipated and straining to have a bowel movement). Do this for five seconds, then breathe. This changes the pressure in your chest and therefore in the big blood vessels in it. That fools your body into thinking your heart should slow down. If the pulse hasn’t slowed, try again. Another way to do the Valsalva maneuver is to stick a finger in your throat and gag yourself. b. Carotid maneuver.Find your carotid pulse (see top photo) just below your jaw. The vagus nerve runs next to it. Massage very firmly for five seconds. Warning: In rare cases this could knock off a piece of a blood clot lodged in this area and cause a stroke. Don’t do this in elderly people or anyone with a history of a stroke. c. Ice-water facial.A little odd, I know, but if you have cold water (preferably ice water,) dip your face in it a few seconds. This stimulates your vagus nerve to slow your heart by causing what’s known as the dive reflex. It’s the same reflex that helps some people survive for a long time under cold water by slowing the body’s metabolism down.
